I consider this piece my foot in the door in the direction I’ve been craving to go in. For years I prided myself on my incredible speed and the high quality I produced in short times. I can finish nice CGed chibis in an hour, sometimes with animation included. And I’m proud of them. And people like that.

Somehow, I got it in my head that you can never become a great artist unless you have speed. This stemmed from reading other amazing artist’s comments and seeing they took like. Half an hour to draw the Mona Lisa, right? I’d always start pieces I wanted to be big ones, but as the two hour mark closed in, I’d rush and hate the piece in the end. I never realized I did this till this piece.

I just wanted to draw when I was hit by inspiration yesterday. While watching TV, I drew this. The TV was very distracting, and I got lost in time. Before I knew it, 3-4 hours had passed and I was really happy with the piece. And then I realized. I keep too much attention on the time.

My goals starting now:

• Stop being so scared to draw people facing the right. You won’t get any better if you don’t try!
• Stop being so scared to attempt to soft shade! You know what you like, it’s just a matter of experimenting and getting that perfect style for you!
• Stop being so scared of drawing BGs. You love that sort of thing, cities, mountains, fantasy- all of it! Learn to draw it already!
• Stop zooming in so much and not zooming out very oftne. I lose sight of the big picture, and then I don’t realize my heads are too big and my hands too small till I’m done with the piece. 
• Stop worrying that people will hate your art. For a while, I forgot why I started to draw in the first place. Because I loved it. I’m not trying to make anybody happy but myself, and by God, I’m going to draw what I want, when I want, how I want. 

I’ve got a long way to go, but I think these are good basic goals. I hope this is my next big year of improvement!

Why can’t I draw like this all the time!? Too bad I’m going to ruin it with my coloring. :( I’ve been hating my coloring a lot, more so than usual lately. Somebody teach me how to color nicely! My blocky cell shading and crappy soft shading just don’t do it for me!
